Mars only comes close every 26 months. At opposition it's a small but detailed disc: the bright polar cap, dark albedo features like Syrtis Major, and the changing colour of the deserts.

We'll run the 8-inch at high power and take turns. Bring patience — planetary observing rewards long looks.
